Arising from the commencement of the Education and Training Boards Act, 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs) were established on 1st July 2013. Upon establishment, the ETBs had responsibility for the delivery of primary, post primary and further education in line with their predecessor VECs. The Education and Training Boards Act 2013 was passed in May 2013. The Act provides for the dissolution of Vocational Education Committees (VECs) and for the establishment of the 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs) through a process involving the merger of some of the 33 existing VECs. Following the amalgamation of former County and City of Cork VECs, the Cork Education and Training Board (CETB) was established.

The Cork Education and Training Board (CETB) are committed to ensuring that the courses and programmes developed and offered to learners meet labour market requirements of the local and national economy. Interaction with business and industry is essential in order to enhance and expand our course provision and meet the skills shortages and gaps in the various sectors. We must ensure that our graduates possess the relevant level and quality of ‘job ready’ skills that employers need.

As well as the delivery of education at post-primary level, the CETB has responsibility for Further Education and Training (FET) in the Cork city and county area and provides a wide range of courses through Colleges and Centres from Levels 1 to 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications http://www.nfq-qqi.com/index.html to individuals over 16 years of age.   FET is a first choice for many and can provide a pathway to the world of work and Higher Education.

Billions, maybe trillions of times a day…

That’s how often people around the world touch something made better by Qualcomm. It could be the smartphone in your pocket, the tablet on your coffee table, that wireless modem in your briefcase… it could even be that navigation system in your car or that action camera strapped to your chest.

Who is Qualcomm, and what do they do? They are engineers, scientists and business strategists from many different countries and speak many different languages. They come from diverse cultures and have unique perspectives. Together, they focus on a single goal—they invent breakthrough technologies that transform how the world connects, computes, and communicates.

Pioneers, risk takers.

While many of their breakthroughs reside “under the hood” of technology familiar today, Qualcomm inventions have transformed the world in a big way. They have helped propel mobile to the forefront of the technology world and brought wireless innovations into new industries. They have created new opportunities for ecosystem players—the wireless device makers, the operators, the developers and the content creators of the world. And more recently, their inventions and breakthroughs have inspired fresh, new ideas from those companies—large and small.

Qualcomm been called dreamers, inventors, rebels, risk takers, pioneers and geeks, and they embrace those labels because in many ways, they’re true. They dream big. They invent bigger. And most importantly, they often do what many thought was impossible.

Tyndall National Institute

The Tyndall National Institute (Tyndall) was created in 2004 at the initiative of the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment and University College Cork (UCC) to bring together complementary activities in photonics, electronics and networking research at the National Microelectronics Research Centre (NMRC), several UCC academic departments and Cork Institute of Technology (CIT). The objective is to create a research institute, which would become a focal point of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Ireland, to support industry and academia nationally and to increase the number of qualified graduate students for the ‘knowledge economy’.

The strengths of the institute at the present time lie in the area of photonics, electronics, materials and nanotechnologies and their applications for life sciences, communications, power electronics and other industries. Research programmes range from theoretical modelling and design to novel material, nanotechnology, device processing and fabrication, packaging and integration; and novel systems incorporating these new devices.

The sky gleams above the Tyndall ‘Monolith’.

Since the foundation of Tyndall additional researchers from UCC and CIT have already become integral partners of Tyndall, in the areas of circuit design, functional nanostructures and RF systems.

As facilities expand the Institute will host researchers from across Ireland, both from academia, industry and from international research laboratories.

Since the creation of a new National Access Programme to Tyndall’s research facilities funded by SFI, partnership with other research bodies around Ireland has been greatly increased
